Whatever the reason, it's left Sawyer and his preferences out in the cold: the designer says the class is his "most commonly played" in both tabletop and CRPGs. Clerics and Priests conjure up images of boring, pacifist proselytisers in a way that Paladins don't, and I imagine that's a bit of a turn-off for players jumping into a swashbuckling fantasy epic. But I also think there's a psychological barrier for a lot of players. I don't think I've ever rolled a Cleric in any of the numerous CRPGs I've played in my time, and I'll admit it's at least slightly because it feels like something less than top billing in my party's line-up. That rings true to me, at least partially. I'm pretty confident that's it," he wrote, summing up players' attitudes to the class as "'Support is for other people.'"Īfter all, being a god-loving type doesn't deter players from playing Paladins-BG3's most popular class-and Sawyer reckons that's because "Paladins smite things and are 'heroic' and people lean into 'deranged zealot with sword and shield' more than 'preacher with Bless'". Coincidentally, Chris is also the one who wrote Planescape Torments story, which is still considered to be the best story ever told in a game) 7. (fun fact: both Durance and GM was made by Chris Avellone. When a Twitter user called Doc Venom tweeted that "people just see Cleric as one of those side-kick classes," Sawyer was quick to agree. OP wait till you recruit the Grieving Mother. I wanted to ask you about the region and its history. So why does Sawyer reckon Clerics are always out of favour? Because players want to be the hero, mostly. Here's how it looks for me:Īfter that I'm getting only these responses:Ģ. same place in his dialogue that comes up when you first talk to him).Īnybody experiencing this issue, please give that a try and let me know if and where you go wrong, and if you do, let me know what you're seeing instead. There are some other options there, and if you accidentally take them you'll go to other places in his dialogue, but you should be able to get back to either of the above journal updating paths by choosing "I had questions" when it's available (i.e. If you pick that, it should update the quest. "Then it was the Godhammer symbol I saw extinguished on your staff." "Durance frowns, and the words come slowly. If you see option 2, it means you haven't asked Durance about the Godhammer symbol on his staff before (so your character doesn't recognize it on sight). I lost Durance for awhile, but post-patch 1.03 he showed up in my Stronghold, just beside the ruined hut. If you see option 1 and choose it, you should get a quest update right there and we're good. Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning). 'You see many things that aren't there, Watcher.'"Īt this point you should have one of two options:ġ. If you haven't asked him anything yet since the last rest (more likely since you just rested), you should get a response that starts: If you've already been asking him questions, he'll shush you and you'll need to rest to approach him again about it (using the same dialogue choices). One of the symbols on your staff - it was dying." "If doubts and curiosity plague you, you're skinning your knuckles on the wrong door." Part of the problem, I believe, is that the world of Pillars of Eternity, and especially its pantheon of Gods, is completely new and foreign to players. Subsequent plays did not improve my feeling about Durances writing, despite understanding his story arc better. "Your face is full of need." Durance snorts. But I felt much the same as you when I played the game the first time. The way it should play out is, you talk to Durance and he says one of four things (they cycle): the dialogue is kind of a rat's nest, structurally. If it isn't happening for you, let me know what you are seeing, and also, if you could, it'd be very helpful for you to file a support ticket and submit a savegame to our QA team if you've got one. Did I just screw myself over Showing 1 - 7 of 7 comments. He had been insulting passersby, spoke in riddles, seemed threatening, and wanted to attach himself to me. We haven't seen anything like it internally. There was a weird guy setting fire to statues not far from my new keep (1st playthrough). If this is a bug I'd like to get it fixed ASAP. Is there any way to fix this, other than loading? Relying on the RNG aspect of the arquebus for a low Dex, low Per character like Durance is often painful because he will let. After resting, I've received a vision and the quest prompts me to discuss it with Durance - but the option isn't available in the dialogue tree. Durance's stats are always going to favor a defensive build, and I've found him much more useful as an offtank or a midline support who uses his staff from behind Eder or Pallegina, rather than using a true ranged weapon.
